Clever $4 hack makes cleaning your ceiling fans easy

With spring bringing hotter than usual temperatures you’re probably about to switch on your ceiling fan.
But before you do, you might want to give it a quick clean to prevent the layer of dust that’s built up over winter flying everywhere and causing sneezing, coughing and mess.
Though ceiling fans seem like one of the trickiest things to clean, there is a very simple hack that gets the job done quickly and easily.

The best part is it will set you back about $4, unless you have a spare old one at home to use for the task.
All you need to do is grab a pillowcase and carefully put it over the blade of the ceiling fan. Then just slide it off, as demonstrated in the video above.

The best bit about this hack is it stops any of the dust from the fan falling down onto the floor (or you).
For an extra clean you can spray the inside of the pillowcase with a mix of vinegar and water first. This will help to move any stubborn dust or marks on the fan, especially if it hasn’t been cleaned in a while.

While you’re up there with the fan, there’s one more thing you might want to check.
Ceiling fans often have a switch that dictates the direction they spin in. This means in winter the fan can be used to help redistribute hot air around the room after it rises, and in summer cool air is directed down.
“Most ceiling fan summer modes spin counter-clockwise to direct cool air to the ground. Blade design also contributes to the downward movement of cool air,” explained fan company Martec in an article on its website.
“If you are not feeling cool air, then it is possible your fan is spinning the wrong way, in winter mode. The summer/winter mode can be found as a switch on the side of the fan or on the remote control.”
So if you flipped the switch for winter or the fan isn’t doing its job in the hot weather, it’s worth taking a look.
